Starting in 1996, control stations have also been set up for the rustic breeds
and performance tests are conducted on the male lines. The tests are carried
out using procedures similar to the ones implemented at the Genetics Center
for the Chianina, Marchigiana and Romagnola breeds, making al necessary changes
to adapt the test to the specific traits of pasture-raised breeds. In fact,
with the Maremmana and Podolica breeds, improved muscle development and daily
weight gain must be achieved while maintainig the valuable rustic and frugal
features unique to these breeds. Bearing all of this in mind, the centers
consist of simple husbandry structures and broad wooded areas and pastures
where the test animals spend most of their time. The breeding typology of
these cattle, in which calving is concentrated between February and April,
has entiled a testing organization that is slightly different from the one
found in Perugia. The animals are not admitted on a monthly basis but are
brought in all togheter in November. Likewise, all tested animals are released
in July, at which time public auctions are also organized to sell approved
bulls.
The Maremmana breed selection center is located at the Alberese (Grosseto)
ranch belonging to the Region of Tuscany, in one of the most typical cattle-fa
rming areas. Instead, the Region of Basilicata hosts the Genetics Center for
the Podolica Breed, which is located in Laurenzana in the province of Potenza
and has over 200 ranches involved in selection activities.
