The Morphological evaluation of beef-cattle is a visual estimate of
the exterior shape of the animal and it is based on the concept of "functional
beauty", a husbandry criterion according to which ana animal that fulfills the
goals for which it was raised is considered "beautiful". This evaluation is
carried out by qualified experts using a linear chart that lists all the most
important items needed to assess cattle. All the values given to each
item are added up to obtain a final score, or in other words, the animal's morphological
score, which is a prerequisite for enrollment in the Herd Book. The experts
who carry out this activity are trained by the Association through special training
sessions and annual refresher courses. ANABIC's staff of experts works throughout
Italy, judging cattle during shows, selecting and evaluating calves being tested
at the Genetics Center, handling the morphological assessment of the breeders
eligible for enrollment in the Herd Books, and setting up mating programs on
individual ranches.
